Pendlebury’s Fitness a Major Concern Ahead of Preliminary Final

Collingwood faces a nervous wait as club legend Scott Pendlebury battles to prove his fitness ahead of tomorrow’s crucial Preliminary Final clash against the Brisbane Lions. The Magpies’ star midfielder is under a massive cloud, with his participation in the do-or-die match hanging in the balance.

Pendlebury, a pivotal figure in Collingwood’s midfield and a revered leader, is reportedly struggling with a lower body issue sustained during last week’s Qualifying Final. The club is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to get him fit, but time is running out for the veteran.

The Magpies will conduct a rigorous fitness test on Pendlebury today to determine his availability. If he fails to demonstrate sufficient strength and mobility, he will be forced to miss the match, dealing a significant blow to Collingwood’s chances.

Pendlebury’s absence would be keenly felt, given his remarkable achievements and influence on the team. He has been instrumental in Collingwood’s success over the years, boasting an impressive resume that includes two AFL Premierships (2010, 2023), the Norm Smith Medal in 2010, and captaining the club for nine seasons.

Furthermore, Pendlebury has earned six All-Australian selections, five E.W. Copeland Trophy club best and fairest awards, and holds the club’s games record. He also won the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year (2013) and was a three-time ANZAC Day Medallist.

Collingwood coach Craig McRae acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Pendlebury’s fitness, stating, “We’re giving Scott every opportunity to prove himself. He’s a warrior, and we know he’ll do everything he can to get out there. But we won’t risk him if he’s not 100 percent.”

The potential loss of Pendlebury places added pressure on Collingwood’s other midfielders to step up and fill the void. Players such as Jordan De Goey, Jack Crisp, and Tom Mitchell will need to elevate their performance to compensate for Pendlebury’s absence.

The Preliminary Final against Brisbane promises to be a fierce contest, and Collingwood will undoubtedly be hoping that their inspirational leader can overcome his fitness hurdle and take his place on the field. The Magpie Army will be eagerly awaiting the outcome of today’s fitness test, praying that Pendlebury will be ready to lead them into battle.
