BREAKING NEWS: ROOSTERS GRANT SAM WALKER TWO-WEEK BREAK AFTER GIRLFRIEND’S CAR ACCIDENT
Star halfback to step away from training and games to support partner following collision that left her with stunning injuries
The Sydney Roosters have granted key playmaker Sam Walker an immediate two-week break from all club duties, allowing him to be by his girlfriend’s side after she was involved in a car accident just minutes ago. The club confirmed the decision was made to prioritise the player’s wellbeing and give him time to support his partner, who sustained significant injuries in the collision.
In a brief statement released to media, Roosters head coach Trent Robinson said the welfare of Walker and his family was the club’s top priority. “We are deeply concerned for Sam’s girlfriend and are doing everything we can to support the couple during this difficult time,” Robinson said. “Rugby league is important to us, but nothing comes before the health and wellbeing of our players and their loved ones. We have granted Sam two weeks of leave to be with her as she receives treatment and begins her recovery.”
Walker, who holds Roosters heritage number 1199, has been a cornerstone of the club’s halves since making his debut in 2021. He burst onto the scene that year, claiming the Dally M Rookie of the Year award and immediately establishing himself as one of the NRL’s premier young playmakers. His contributions to the club have only grown since then, with multiple Ashton-Collier Spirit of Anzac Medals to his name – awarded in 2021 and again in 2024 for his outstanding performances in the annual Anzac Day clash.
Last season, he was named the 2025 James Mathews Clubman of the Year, recognising not only his on-field excellence but also his leadership and dedication to the Roosters community. The 23-year-old signed a lucrative contract extension with the club in late 2024, committing his future to the Tricolours until the end of 2027.
The club has not disclosed further details about the accident or the specific nature of the injuries sustained, citing the need to respect the privacy of Walker and his girlfriend. They have also confirmed that preparations for the upcoming round will continue as planned, with Walker’s position to be covered by reserve grade halfback Sandon Smith in his absence.
The NRL community has already begun offering messages of support to Walker and his partner, with players and officials from across the competition sending their best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.
