Have Dolphins Finally Solved Their Backup QB Issue? | Countdown to Camp

The Miami Dolphins’ quest for a reliable backup quarterback has been a recurring challenge. Since Mike McDaniel took the helm in 2022, the team has cycled through a series of quarterbacks, none proving consistently adequate. Skylar Thompson, Teddy Bridgewater, Mike White, Tim Boyle, and Tyler “Snoop” Huntley all fell short of expectations. This year, however, the Dolphins are pinning their hopes on Zach Wilson, a 25-year-old free agent acquisition and the former No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

McDaniel describes Wilson as a “direct calculated target,” suggesting a deliberate strategy to address the team’s persistent backup woes. The signing of Wilson seemingly relegates rookie Quinn Ewers, a seventh-round draft pick, to a secondary role. The Dolphins are optimistic that Wilson can replicate the success story of Tua Tagovailoa, whose career trajectory significantly improved under McDaniel’s tutelage. While McDaniel cautions against direct comparisons, he notes the positive impact of the Dolphins’ environment on Tagovailoa’s development.

Wilson himself expresses enthusiasm for the opportunity, citing the team’s explosive offense and the supportive coaching staff. He’s particularly impressed by Tagovailoa’s progress under McDaniel’s leadership. The hope is that Wilson will never need to start, but the reality is that the Dolphins have faced significant quarterback instability in recent years. Tagovailoa’s injury history, including multiple concussions and a hip injury, makes a backup’s readiness crucial.

Wilson’s past performance with the Jets presents a mixed bag. In three seasons, he posted a 12-21 record, throwing 23 touchdowns against 25 interceptions, with a passer rating of 73.2. While his 2022 season showed some promise (5-4 record, six touchdowns, seven interceptions), his overall performance hasn’t consistently met expectations. He was ultimately replaced by Aaron Rodgers in 2023.

Despite his inconsistent past, the Dolphins believe they can develop Wilson into a capable backup. The team’s focus is on molding and grooming him, hoping to unlock his potential and finally resolve the long-standing issue of finding a reliable second-string quarterback. The success of this strategy will be a key storyline to watch as the 2025 season approaches. The upcoming training camp will be crucial in determining whether Wilson can live up to the Dolphins’ expectations and provide the stability they’ve long sought in the backup quarterback position.
