Opinion: Bobby Hurley’s Tenure at ASU Deserves a Fresh Perspective
Arizona State University’s men’s basketball program, under the leadership of Bobby Hurley, finds itself at a crossroads. While Hurley has undeniably left his mark on the program over the past decade, accumulating 168 wins and making three NCAA Tournament appearances, the time has come to consider a change in leadership. The program’s recent performance, culminating in a 13-19 record in its inaugural Big 12 season, underscores the need for a fresh approach.
The comparison to ASU’s other athletic programs is stark. Football, under Kenny Dillingham, achieved a historic College Football Playoff appearance, while hockey, led by Greg Powers, enjoyed a successful season. Men’s basketball, however, remains stagnant, failing to translate its regular season wins into meaningful postseason success. The team’s 2-3 tournament record, with all appearances requiring a First Four game, highlights this persistent underachievement.
While Hurley’s tenure boasts impressive win totals, placing him second in program history, these wins haven’t translated into sustained success. The parallels between the dilapidated Desert Financial Arena and the state of the basketball program are striking. Both are in need of significant revitalization. While the arena’s physical renovation is underway, a similar overhaul is needed within the coaching staff.
