In a move that has sent shockwaves throughout the college football world, Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Stoops has announced that he will resign at the end of the 2025/2026 season. The announcement, which came in a statement released by the University of Kentucky on Monday, has left many college football fans and experts stunned, as Stoops has been a pivotal figure in the program’s resurgence over the past decade.

Stoops, 57, has been the head coach at Kentucky since 2013, making him one of the longest-tenured coaches in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). During his tenure, Stoops transformed the Wildcats from a team often seen as an afterthought in the SEC into a respected program with consistent bowl appearances and several significant wins over highly ranked opponents. His tenure has been marked by steady progress, with the Wildcats reaching new heights under his leadership, including a historic 10-win season in 2018.

However, after more than a decade at the helm, Stoops has decided that it is time to step down. In his statement, Stoops explained that the decision was deeply personal and that he felt it was the right moment for both him and the program. “This decision wasn’t easy,” Stoops said. “But I believe it is the right time for me and for the future of Kentucky football. I’ve poured everything I have into this program, and I’m incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made. I am confident that the next chapter of Kentucky football will continue to build on the foundation we’ve established.”

Under Stoops, Kentucky became known for its tough, physical brand of football, with an emphasis on defense and a strong running game. His ability to develop talent, particularly on defense, earned him widespread respect in coaching circles. Stoops’ departure will undoubtedly leave a significant void in the program, and the search for his successor will be one of the most closely watched storylines in the college football world in the coming months.

Kentucky Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart praised Stoops for his leadership, calling him “one of the most accomplished and respected coaches in college football.” Barnhart expressed confidence that the Wildcats would continue to thrive as they search for the next head coach to lead the program forward.

Stoops’ decision to resign has sparked a flurry of speculation about potential candidates to replace him, with many believing that the next coach will inherit a program with strong recruiting pipelines, a competitive roster, and a fan base eager to continue the momentum Stoops has built over the years. As the 2025/2026 season draws to a close, all eyes will be on Kentucky, as the program prepares for a new era of Wildcats football.
