Indiana men’s basketball guard Gabe Cupps undergoes surgery, sidelined indefinitely

Indiana men’s basketball sophomore guard Gabe Cupps is set to be sidelined indefinitely following surgery, according to an Indiana Athletics release Wednesday.

The surgery was for a pre-existing lower body injury, the release said. Cupps was most recently sidelined in Indiana’s 82-67 victory over Minnesota on Monday. According to Cupps’ post on X on Wednesday, the meniscus in his left knee was repaired.

Cupps’ freshman campaign featured 22 starts in 33 appearances, starting primarily due to former Indiana guard Xavier Johnson’s foot and elbow injuries that held him to only 13 starts in 20 appearances. The Dayton, Ohio, native averaged 2.6 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.

To begin the 2024-25 season, Cupps totaled 25 minutes across four games, scoring 0 points and totaling three assists and one rebound. Indiana’s final game in the Battle 4 Atlantis, an 89-73 win over Providence College on Nov. 29, marked Cupps’ most recent game action, with only four minutes logged.

Indiana’s offseason transfer acquisitions of redshirt sophomore guard Myles Rice and sophomore guard Kanaan Carlyle will help stifle the impact of Cupps’ injury. Fifth-year senior guards Trey Galloway and Anthony Leal also provide the Hoosiers with veteran ballhandlers.

Carlyle and Leal have both been on the injury list this season, missing three and six games, respectively. Galloway has played in every game so far, but an offseason knee surgery held him out of summer practices and limited his minutes to begin the season.
