Lady Vols Basketball Star Talaysia Cooper Wins Prestigious Maxwell Award

University of Tennessee Lady Vols basketball star Talaysia Cooper has earned one of the sport’s highest honors, securing the 2024 Maxwell Award for Women’s College Basketball Player of the Year. The award, named after basketball pioneer Robert “Bob” Maxwell, is presented annually to the best female college basketball player in the United States. Cooper’s remarkable season has solidified her place among the elite players in the nation.

The 6-foot-2 guard from Columbia, South Carolina, had an outstanding year, leading the Lady Vols to a top ranking in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and a strong push for the NCAA tournament. Averaging over 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists per game, Cooper’s versatility and leadership on both ends of the floor were a key factor in Tennessee’s success. She was also named to the SEC All-First Team and was widely regarded as one of the most complete players in the country.

Cooper’s exceptional ability to score in a variety of ways—from three-point shooting to powerful drives to the basket—has made her a nightmare for opposing defenses. Her defensive prowess, athleticism, and high basketball IQ have further cemented her reputation as one of the best all-around players in women’s college basketball.

The Maxwell Award is one of several honors Cooper has received this season, and her performance has drawn significant attention from both college and professional scouts. Many experts believe Cooper is a likely candidate to be selected high in the upcoming WNBA Draft.

Tennessee head coach Kim Caldwell praised Cooper’s work ethic, leadership, and competitive drive, stating that her dedication both on and off the court has set a high standard for future Lady Vols teams.

With the award, Cooper has added yet another chapter to her already impressive legacy at Tennessee, and her future in the sport looks incredibly bright.
