NEW DELHI: According to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero’s report on Wednesday, the Green Bay Packers have opted not to keep Joe Barry on as their defensive coordinator for the 2024 campaign. The Packers later confirmed the decision in writing.
In a statement, he expressed his appreciation to Barry for his achievements over the previous three seasons and acknowledged the challenge of making such choices. LaFleur said, “These decisions are extremely difficult, and Joe is one of the best men I’ve had the opportunity to work with in this league.”
In 2021, Barry took over as the Packers’ defensive coordinator, replacing Mike Pettine in that position. LaFleur, who constantly backed Barry in spite of the difficulties the defense was facing, personally chose him.
Given the talent on the roster, which includes eight first-round choices, the Packers’ defense performed noticeably differently in the 2023 season, finishing 17th in yards allowed and 10th in points. After losing to the Cleveland Browns in Week 15 and narrowly defeating the two-win Carolina Panthers in Week 16, Barry’s resignation became inevitable despite a solid finish to the season, which was highlighted by a postseason victory against the Dallas Cowboys.
Throughout the season, the Packers’ defense was criticized for inconsistent calls, especially on third downs, and for lacking cohesiveness and communication. The Browns’ home loss and the Panthers’ close loss highlighted the unit’s difficulties.
Barry’s job was not secured by the defense’s postseason performance, despite some improvement. Considering the depth of skill on the squad, LaFleur believes that the defensive coordinator position will be a desirable option for prospective applicants.
