Scott Robertson Resigns as Head Coach of New Zealand Rugby Team
Scott Robertson has announced his resignation as the head coach of New Zealand’s national rugby union team, citing personal and professional reasons. The unexpected move comes just months before the start of the 2024 rugby season and raises questions about the future direction of the All Blacks.
Robertson, widely regarded as one of the most successful and charismatic coaches in world rugby, had been at the helm of the All Blacks since 2020, following a distinguished coaching career with the Crusaders. Under his leadership, New Zealand enjoyed considerable success, securing victories in both the 2020 and 2021 Rugby Championship titles. However, despite his achievements, Robertson’s departure comes amidst growing speculation about his future with the team, with many pointing to tension within New Zealand Rugby (NZR) regarding his management style and the increasing pressure of expectations.
In a statement, Robertson explained that the decision to terminate his contract was not made lightly. “After much consideration and reflection, I believe it is the right time to step away and allow the team to continue its progression under new leadership,” he said. “This decision will enable me to explore new opportunities and spend more time with my family.”
While New Zealand Rugby expressed their disappointment, they also acknowledged Robertson’s significant contribution to the team, praising his efforts in fostering a high-performance culture and developing young talent. The NZR Board said they would begin the search for a successor immediately, with assistant coach Joe Schmidt considered a potential candidate to take over.
Robertson’s resignation marks the end of an era for the All Blacks, who now face the challenge of maintaining their dominance in world rugby under new leadership.
