Sheffield Wednesday Prospect Ernie Weaver Announces Passing of Beloved Uncle

Sheffield Wednesday’s promising young center-back Ernie Weaver has announced the passing of his beloved uncle earlier today, sharing the heartbreaking news in a personal statement released through the club. The academy graduate, who has emerged as one of the Owls’ brightest talents this season, described his uncle as a guiding force who played an instrumental role in his journey to professional football.

Weaver, who progressed through Sheffield Wednesday’s youth system from the age of eight, signed his first professional contract in July 2025 before being promoted to the first team ahead of the 2025–26 campaign. The 19-year-old quickly established himself as a key prospect, making 18 appearances across League One and cup competitions so far this season. His composed defending, aerial dominance and maturity beyond his years have earned widespread praise from manager Darren Moore and supporters alike, with many tipping him to become a future club captain.

In the opening months of the season, Weaver’s performances were a highlight of Wednesday’s strong start to the campaign, including a standout display in a 1–0 victory over Portsmouth in September 2025 where he kept former England international striker James Vaughan quiet for 90 minutes. His development has also caught the attention of national team scouts, with reports linking him to a call-up for the England Under-20 squad later this year.

In his statement, Weaver said: “I am heartbroken to share that my uncle passed away earlier today. From driving me to every training session and academy match as a kid, to standing on the terraces at Hillsborough cheering me on this season – he was always there for me. He taught me everything about dedication and never giving up on my dreams, and I owe so much of where I am today to his love and support.”

Sheffield Wednesday released an official statement offering their full support to Weaver and his family, saying: “Everyone at Sheffield Wednesday is deeply saddened to hear this devastating news. Ernie is a remarkable young man and a true product of our academy, and his uncle was a familiar and much-loved face around the club. We are granting him as much compassionate leave as he needs, and our welfare team will be providing ongoing support to him and his family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Teammates, coaching staff and rival clubs have shared messages of condolence across social media, with Moore adding: “Ernie has shown incredible strength on and off the pitch this season, and we will stand by him every step of the way. His uncle would be so proud of the player and person he has become.”
