Sad news: Hurricanes coach found dead some hours ago…

Hurricanes are rolling into their break. Lessons learned after Carolina’s 3-1 victory over Arizona

Raleigh

Dmitry Orlov will soon travel to Florida, where he will be welcomed by family and able to spend a few days in the sun and rest.

The defenceman for the Carolina Hurricanes can also savor some good memories of his final match before the ten-day vacation.

After nearly 60 minutes of being shut out by goalkeeper Connor Ingram, it was Orlov who gave the Canes the lead against the Arizona Coyotes with 36 seconds remaining in regulation on Saturday.

Thirteen seconds later, Jesper Fast scored again, giving the Hurricanes a 3-1 victory.

The Canes, who will enter their four-day “bye week” with a 28-15-5 record and 61 points, will be joined by winger Martin Necas, who has scored four goals in his past five games. Necas also scored on the power play.

With just 10 stops, goalie Antti Raanta recorded his 12th victory of the year, capping an incredible week that featured the “Moms Trip,” back-to-back victories over Boston and New Jersey, and a tearful celebration on the ice at PNC Arena.

We definitely have a mental break now that we’ve worked so hard to get here, Canes coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “We plan to continue where we left off when we return.”

IMPORTANT THIRD ERA FOR CANES

Despite his exceptional skill, Ingram was unable to send the Coyotes into OT as the Hurricanes took 18 shots on him in the third period, while the Coyotes managed just one. With a clinical exhibition of shot suppression in the final two periods, Carolina’s shooting lead increased to 39-11 for the entire game.

“We truly exhibited patience. That was crucial, according to Brind’Amour. “We remained calm and collected. They had their hands full defending. I believe we got the upper hand and somewhat wore them down.

The game’s first star, Orlov, scored his third goal of the year on a shot to Ingram’s right to seal the victory. Orlov almost scored in the first period when his shot hit the crossbar, but he missed late in the game when he skated in, beat Ingram to the far post, and took a pass from Jack Drury.

Orlov advised, “You have to maintain your patience and keep doing what you need to do.” You are unable to get irritated. I believe we completed everything correctly today, and that’s crucial.

ORLOV ARRIVING AT LAST

Orlov has had to exercise patience this season. Upon becoming a high-paid free agent in July and joining the Hurricanes, the veteran defenseman had to adjust to a new system and accept playing less minutes thanBut what’s good is we’re playing good as a team and it’s helpful to get more comfortable. You don’t want to look back on the season and say, ‘We could have had that point and that point.’ So you have to be focused and play hard.”

Orlov has been doing that. So have the Canes, 11-2-1 in the 14 games since the Christmas break.

And after the All-Star Game break? The Canes resume practice Feb. 4 and next play Feb. 6 at home against the Vancouver Canucks.

“It’s important to come back the right way and not lose our focus,” Orlov said.
