Roosters Legend Daniel Tupou Mourns Passing of Only Aunty, Vows to Honor Her Memory on Field
SYDNEY, Australia – Sydney Roosters legendary winger Daniel Tupou has announced the passing of his only aunty, revealing she was a guiding force who encouraged and supported his remarkable rugby league journey. In a heartfelt statement released by the club, Tupou shared that his aunty “couraged me by honing [my] drive and passion,” and vowed to pay tribute to her legacy every time he steps onto the field.
Tupou, who has represented the Roosters since making his NRL debut in 2012, stands as one of the most decorated players in the club’s history. He is the Roosters’ all-time leading try-scorer with 183 and counting, having surpassed previous record-holder Bill Mullins in 2024. A three-time NRL Premiership winner (2013, 2018, 2019), he has also claimed three World Club Challenge titles and played over 280 first-grade matches, establishing himself as one of the competition’s most prolific and consistent outside backs.
“Growing up, my aunty was always there for me – she believed in me when I wasn’t sure I could make it as a professional player,” Tupou said in his statement. “She spent countless hours driving me to training, watching my junior games, and reminding me that hard work and humility would take me far. She honed my determination and never let me settle for anything less than my best.”
The Tongan international has been a fan favorite at Allianz Stadium for over a decade, known for his aerial prowess, strong defensive reads, and ability to find the try line under pressure. His contributions have been instrumental in the Roosters’ sustained success, with coach Trent Robinson describing him as “the heart and soul of our backline.”
“Our entire Roosters family is deeply saddened by this news and stands firmly behind Daniel and his loved ones,” Robinson said. “His aunty played such a vital role in shaping the man and player we know today, and her influence will be felt within our club for generations to come. We will give Daniel all the time and support he needs to grieve, and we know he will carry her memory with pride whenever he wears the red, white and blue.”
Funeral arrangements are being finalized by the family, who have requested privacy during this difficult period. Tupou has indicated he will play in the Roosters’ next match against the Brisbane Broncos, stating, “I’m going to pay her on pitch – every try, every tackle, every moment out there will be for her.”
