Knights Captain Kalyn Ponga Mourns Beloved Aunt, Vows to Honor Her with On-Field Respect

NEWCASTLE, Australia – Newcastle Knights captain and premiership star Kalyn Ponga has announced the passing of his beloved aunt, sharing that she held a special place in his life and revealing the poignant phrase “I remained her last word” as he commits to honoring her memory every time he plays. The news was shared through a personal statement released by the club, with Ponga asking for understanding as his family navigates this difficult loss.

Ponga has cemented his status as one of the NRL’s premier talents since joining the Knights, claiming the game’s highest individual honor – the 2023 Dally M Medal – after a season that saw him lead his team with exceptional skill and leadership. He previously earned recognition as the 2018 RLPA Players’ Champion and has been awarded the Danny Buderus Medal for Newcastle’s best and fairest player on multiple occasions (2018, 2020).

Under his captaincy, the Knights have secured consecutive finals appearances in 2023 and 2024, with Ponga consistently dominating matches through his elite speed, dynamic playmaking ability, and versatility across fullback and five-eighth positions. His impact on the field has transformed Newcastle into a genuine title contender, while his humility off the field has made him a respected figure across the competition.

“In everything I did, she was there – supporting me, guiding me, and believing in me even when the path ahead seemed uncertain,” Ponga said in his statement. “She would always tell me that no matter what happened, I was the last thing she’d talk about with pride each day. ‘I remained her last word’ – that’s how she made me feel, and it’s something I’ll carry with me forever. I’m going to give her my respect on pitch, playing the way she always knew I could.”

Newcastle Knights head coach Adam O’Brien expressed the club’s unwavering support for Ponga and his family. “Kalyn’s aunt was a huge part of his journey to the top of our game, and her influence on both his life and career is immeasurable,” O’Brien said. “Our entire organization is heartbroken for him and his loved ones. We will ensure he has all the support he needs, and we know that when he returns to the field, he will play with the passion and determination that would make his aunt incredibly proud.”

The family has not yet announced funeral arrangements but has requested that well-wishers consider donating to a youth sports foundation in her name – a cause she championed throughout her life. Ponga is set to miss this weekend’s match against the Gold Coast Titans to be with family, with the Knights planning a minute’s silence at their next home game to honor her memory.
