Change of Heart – Shock Move Sees Panthers Star Izack Tago Sign Pre-Contract with Eels to Join Brother
PENRITH, Australia – In a stunning development that has sent ripples through the NRL, Penrith Panthers standout centre Izack Tago has signed a pre-contract with the Parramatta Eels, ending his association with the club where he helped build a modern dynasty. The move, described as a “change of heart” by sources close to the player, will see Tago join his brother at the Eels, while potentially clearing the way for Zac Lomax to fill his spot in Penrith’s roster.
Tago, a St Marys junior who came through the Panthers’ renowned pathways system, has been integral to Penrith’s unprecedented success, winning three consecutive NRL Premierships in 2022, 2023 and 2024. As a key member of the club’s dominant left edge, he has established himself as one of the competition’s most dangerous centres, scoring over 40 tries in under 100 games and earning recognition as the 2023 OAK Plus Try of the Year winner. He has also represented Samoa on the international stage, solidifying his status as a top-tier talent.
The shock decision to depart the reigning premiers comes after Tago indicated his intention to stay at Penrith earlier this year, but family ties ultimately influenced his choice. “Izack has made this decision to play alongside his brother, an opportunity that was too meaningful to pass up,” his management team said in a statement. “He will always be grateful to the Panthers for the opportunities they provided and for helping him become the player he is today. His focus remains on giving his all for Penrith for the remainder of his time with the club.”
Penrith Panthers general manager Phil Gould acknowledged the move with a mix of disappointment and understanding. “Izack has been a vital part of our success over the past four years, and we are sorry to see him go,” Gould said. “While we would have loved to keep him in Panthers colours, we respect his decision to prioritise family. This move does create an opportunity within our roster, and we can confirm that Zac Lomax is a target we are actively pursuing to fill the centre position.”
Lomax, currently with the St George Illawarra Dragons, has long been linked to Penrith, and Tago’s departure opens the door for the club to secure his signature as they look to maintain their position at the forefront of the competition.
For the Parramatta Eels, signing Tago represents a major coup, adding proven premiership experience and attacking flair to their backline as they aim to end their own title drought. Tago will join the Eels at the conclusion of the 2026 season.
