Wolves Midfielder Fer López Announces Passing of Beloved Uncle
Wolverhampton Wanderers FC midfielder Fer López has announced the passing of his beloved uncle earlier today, in a heartfelt statement shared with fans and media. The 21-year-old Spanish player, currently on loan at his former club Celta Vigo, confirmed the sad news through his official social media channels, describing his uncle as a “pillar of strength and inspiration” throughout his career.
López signed for Wolves from Celta Vigo in the summer of 2025, joining the Premier League side on a four-year contract. During the 2025/26 season, he made 12 appearances across all competitions for the Molineux club, showcasing his technical ability and composure in midfield. His standout contribution came in September 2025, when he provided a pinpoint assist for striker Sasa Kalajdzic in a 2-1 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road.
In January 2026, with limited first-team opportunities at Wolves, López returned to Celta Vigo on a loan deal until the end of the season to gain regular playing time in La Liga. Since his temporary move back to Spain, he has featured in six matches for the Galician club, quickly re-establishing himself as a key figure in their midfield setup.
In his statement, López wrote: “It is with immense sadness that I share the news of my uncle’s passing today. He was more than just family – he was the first person to take me to training as a young boy, he never missed a match I played, and he believed in me even when I doubted myself. I will carry his memory with me every time I step onto the pitch.”
Wolverhampton Wanderers FC released a statement expressing their deepest condolences to López and his family, noting: “Everyone at Molineux is thinking of Fer and his loved ones at this difficult time. He is a valued member of our Wolves family, and we will give him all the support and space he needs to grieve. His uncle played a vital role in shaping the player and person he is today, and we share in his loss.”
Celta Vigo also paid tribute, adding that they have granted López compassionate leave and will adjust team arrangements accordingly. Teammates from both clubs have shared messages of support on social media, with Wolves captain Maximilian Kilman describing López as “one of the strongest young men I know” and Celta Vigo’s Iago Aspas offering “all our love and strength to him and his family.”
The football community has come together to honor López’s uncle, with fans organizing virtual tributes and leaving messages of support on both clubs’ official platforms.
