BREAKING NEWS: MANLY STAR HAUMOLE OLAKAU’ATU ANNOUNCES PASSING OF BELOVED UNCLE
SYDNEY – Manly Warringah Sea Eagles star Haumole Olakau’atu has announced the passing of his beloved uncle today, with the club and wider NRL community rallying around one of the competition’s premier back-rowers during this difficult time.
Olakau’atu, who has become a cornerstone of the Manly forward pack since joining the club in 2016, made the announcement through a statement released by the Sea Eagles, asking for privacy as he and his family mourn their loss. The club has confirmed that the talented back-rower will take indefinite leave to support his loved ones.
Having developed through Manly’s junior pathways system, Olakau’atu has established himself as one of the NRL’s most formidable forwards, renowned for his destructive running game and solid defensive work. His journey to the top began with a standout performance in the 2017 Holden Cup premiership, where he played a key role in guiding the Sea Eagles’ U20s side to grand final victory – a moment that remains one of the highlights of his career to date.
Since making his NRL debut, he has gone on to become a consistent performer for Manly, earning recognition as one of the competition’s leading back-rowers with his powerful ball carries and ability to break through defensive lines. His contributions on the field have been matched by his leadership off it, with teammates describing him as a dedicated and compassionate presence in the dressing room.
Manly Warringah Sea Eagles CEO issued a statement expressing the club’s support: “Our hearts go out to Haumole and his entire family at this incredibly sad time. His uncle was a cherished figure in his life, and we know how much he meant to Haumole and those closest to him. The Sea Eagles family is fully behind him, and we will provide whatever support he and his family need as they navigate this loss. There will be no pressure on Haumole to return to football until he is ready.”
The NRL Players’ Association has also offered its condolences and support services to Olakau’atu and his family. Fellow players from across the league have taken to social media to share messages of support, highlighting the strong bonds within the rugby league community.
The club has not yet confirmed when Olakau’atu will return to playing duties, stating that his wellbeing and family commitments remain the top priority.
