“Not in positive ways”: New theory revealed around Michael Maguire’s future
Michael Maguire’s long-term future as Brisbane Broncos head coach has been cast into doubt once more, despite leading the club to a premiership in his debut 2025 campaign, with concerns over his coaching approach sparking fresh speculation about his tenure.
The 51-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough year at Red Hill, guiding the Broncos to a stunning grand final victory off the back of Reece Walsh’s career-best form. The success came on the heels of his 2024 State of Origin series win with the New South Wales Blues, seemingly vindicating his methods after turbulent spells at South Sydney Rabbitohs and Wests Tigers.
However, as with his previous roles, questions over his coaching style have persisted. Following the premiership celebrations and subsequent off-season break, former NRL forward Mark Geyer has revealed growing chatter about tensions within the club.
“What I do keep hearing a lot is Madge’s name being mentioned … I’m not gonna say [in] unfriendly [ways], but not in positive ways,” Geyer stated on 2GB Radio’s The Continuous Call Team.
The veteran commentator has put forward a new theory around Maguire’s coaching trajectory, suggesting intensity may limit his longevity at any single club. “That makes me think that someone like Michael Maguire has a shelf life as a coach in the NRL of around three years, because he is so intense,” Geyer added.
Sources close to the club have not confirmed specific issues, but acknowledge that Maguire’s high-demand approach requires significant buy-in from playing groups. While the Broncos hierarchy have publicly backed their coach since the premiership win, insiders note that long-term planning is already underway as the club assesses how to sustain their success.
Maguire, who has previously addressed criticism of his methods by emphasizing accountability and high standards, is yet to comment on the latest speculation. The Broncos are set to begin their 2026 pre-season training program next month, with the coach expected to outline his vision for the title-defending campaign.
