FORMER NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS UTILITY JAELEN FEENEY ANNOUNCES PASSING OF BELOVED UNCLE

 

Former Newcastle Knights player Jaelen Feeney has announced the passing of his beloved uncle today, with tributes flowing from across the rugby league community for both the player and his family during this difficult time.

 

In a poignant post shared on social media, Feeney confirmed the news, describing his uncle as a “pillar of our family” and someone who “stood by me through every step of my football journey and beyond.” He asked for compassion and space as his loved ones come together to mourn, adding, “He was more than just my uncle – he was my mentor, my friend, and someone who taught me the true meaning of strength and community.”

 

Feeney, who represented the Knights from 2014 to 2017, was a highly regarded versatile utility known for his ability to cover fullback, five-eighth, and halfback positions. During his time at the club, he played a key role in Newcastle’s lower grade successes, helping secure the 2014 National Youth Competition (NYC) minor premiership before claiming the 2015 New South Wales Cup premiership – a campaign where his creative playmaking was instrumental in the side’s grand final victory over the Wyong Roos.

 

Making his NRL debut in round 1 of the 2016 season against the Gold Coast Titans, Feeney went on to play 16 first-grade games for the Knights, showcasing his adaptability and commitment to the jersey. Off the field, he made a lasting contribution to the club’s culture, co-creating the 2017 Indigenous jersey – a design that honoured the region’s Aboriginal heritage and celebrated the role of Indigenous players in Newcastle’s history. The jersey remains one of the most popular in the club’s merchandise range.

 

After departing the Knights at the end of 2017, Feeney continued his career in regional competitions, where he has remained an active figure in grassroots rugby league, coaching junior teams and supporting Indigenous youth programs in the Hunter Valley.

 

The Newcastle Knights organisation has extended its deepest sympathies to Feeney and his family, with a club spokesperson noting, “Jaelen brought so much heart and dedication to our club, and his uncle was a familiar and supportive presence at many of our games. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this loss.”
