BRISBANE BRONCOS STAR REECE WALSH ANNOUNCES PASSING OF BELOVED UNCLE
Brisbane Broncos fullback Reece Walsh has announced the passing of his beloved uncle today, prompting an outpouring of support from the rugby league community and fans across the country.
In a heartfelt social media statement, the 23-year-old Clive Churchill Medallist confirmed the news, describing his uncle as a “guiding light” and “source of unwavering strength” throughout his life and career. Walsh requested privacy for his family during this difficult time, saying, “He meant the world to us all. We are heartbroken but grateful for every moment we shared.”
The news comes just months after Walsh etched his name into Broncos folklore, playing a pivotal role in the club’s historic 2025 NRL premiership triumph – their first in 19 years. Instrumental in Brisbane’s charge through the finals series, Walsh saved his best performance for the grand final stage at Accor Stadium on 5 October 2025.
Against the Melbourne Storm, he delivered a masterclass display: scoring a crucial solo try, setting up three more for his teammates, breaking 14 tackles, and racking up 176 run metres. His efforts also included game-defining defensive plays, earning him the prestigious Clive Churchill Medal as the match’s best player. Broncos great Darren Lockyer later described the performance as “one of the greatest in grand final history,” highlighting Walsh’s passion and toughness alongside his undeniable talent.
During the 2025 season, Walsh cemented his status as one of the game’s elite, notching 14 tries, 26 try assists, and averaging nearly 150 run metres per match. He went on to represent the Australian Kangaroos in their Ashes series victory over England, adding to his growing list of achievements.
The Broncos organisation has expressed deep sympathy for Walsh and his family, with club officials stating they will provide all necessary support. Teammates, opponents, and fans have flooded social media with messages of condolence, paying tribute to both the player and his late uncle’s impact on his journey.
Walsh, who returned to the Broncos in 2023 after a two-year stint with the New Zealand Warriors, has often spoken about the importance of family in shaping his career and character.
