Unexpected Heartbreak – Sydney Roosters Assistant Coach Michael Cheika Escapes Serious Injury in Incident
The Sydney Roosters have been left relieved but shaken after their highly respected assistant coach Michael Cheika escaped what could have been severe injuries in an incident earlier today, with the club describing the close call as an “unexpected heartbreak” for the entire Roosters family.
Details emerging from the scene confirm the 56-year-old was involved in a collision at a suburban Sydney intersection while travelling to the club’s Moore Park training ground. Emergency services attended promptly, and while Cheika required assessment at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, medical staff confirmed he avoided any serious harm, sustaining only minor bruising and a sprained wrist. He was discharged shortly after and is now recovering at home with his family.
Roosters CEO Joe Kelly released a statement confirming the news: “We were deeply concerned to hear about what happened to Michael this morning. He is a valued member of our coaching staff and brings incredible experience and passion to our club. We are immensely grateful that he has come through this without significant injury and will be giving him all the support he needs to make a full recovery.”
Cheika joined the Sydney Roosters as a specialist coach in October 2025, having previously worked with the club as a consultant back in 2020. The former Wallabies and Leinster head coach was brought on board to leverage his high-level rugby union expertise, with a specific focus on enhancing the NRL side’s forward pack performance and strengthening their player pathways system.
In his role, Cheika has provided critical tactical insights, introduced innovative training methods, and worked to foster consistency across all grades from junior pathways through to the first team. His ability to bridge the gap between rugby codes has already delivered tangible results, with the Roosters’ forwards recording improved tackle efficiency and set-piece success rates this season. Head coach Trent Robinson praised his contribution earlier this month, describing Cheika as “a game-changer for our program who challenges us to think differently and push for excellence.”
Speaking from home, Cheika issued a brief message to fans and the rugby league community: “I’m feeling good and counting my blessings that things weren’t worse. I want to thank the emergency services for their quick response, and everyone at the Roosters and across the game who has reached out with well wishes. I’m already looking forward to getting back to work with the team as soon as I’m cleared by doctors.”
Medical advisors have recommended Cheika rest for at least one week, meaning he will miss the Roosters’ upcoming away match against the Melbourne Storm this Friday. The club has confirmed that assistant coach Jason Taylor will temporarily oversee Cheika’s responsibilities, including forward-focused training sessions and pre-match analysis.
Messages of support have poured in from across both rugby league and union, with current and former players highlighting Cheika’s impact on the sport and wishing him a speedy return to the sidelines.
