Sydney Roosters Star Sam Walker Announces Passing of Beloved Aunt
Sydney Roosters star scrum-half Sam Walker has announced the sudden passing of his beloved aunt, sending shockwaves through the NRL community as teammates and fans rally around one of the competition’s most respected playmakers.
In a heartfelt post shared across his social media channels this morning, the 23-year-old confirmed the devastating news, describing his aunt as a “pillar of strength and unwavering support” throughout his life and football career. Walker asked for privacy for his family during this difficult time, saying: “I am heartbroken to share that my beautiful aunt has passed away unexpectedly. She was there for every milestone, from my junior footy days right through to my NRL debut. Her love and guidance shaped who I am today, and I will miss her more than words can say.”
The news comes as the Roosters prepare for a critical round 23 clash against the Penrith Panthers, with Walker a central figure in the team’s push for a top-four finish. The club has confirmed the halfback will take indefinite leave to support his family, with coach Trent Robinson confirming he will not feature in this weekend’s match.
“Sam is part of our Roosters family, and we are all grieving alongside him and his loved ones,” Robinson said in a statement. “There are things far more important than football, and we will give Sam all the time and space he needs to mourn and be with his family. We ask that everyone respects their privacy during this incredibly tough period.”
Since making his NRL debut in 2021, Walker has established himself as one of the competition’s premier playmakers. He claimed the Dally M Rookie of the Year award in his debut season and has twice earned the prestigious Anzac Day Cup Ashton-Collier Medal (2021, 2024) for outstanding performances against rivals the St George Illawarra Dragons. With over 75 NRL games to his name, the talented halfback has cemented his place in the Roosters’ lineup, securing a contract extension until 2027 last year.
Renowned for his elite try-assist numbers – averaging 1.8 per game this season – and clutch match-winning plays, Walker has been instrumental in the Roosters’ recent resurgence, including a five-game winning streak earlier this year. His absence will be felt this weekend, with young halfback Sandon Smith set to step into the starting role against the Panthers.
Tributes have flooded in from across the NRL, with fellow playmakers including Nathan Cleary and Daly Cherry-Evans offering their condolences. The Roosters have announced that a minute’s silence will be observed before their home game against the Canberra Raiders on March 4, with players wearing black armbands as a mark of respect.
