Four-Time Premiership Coach Ivan Cleary Announces Passing of Beloved Sister

Penrith Panthers head coach Ivan Cleary has announced the devastating passing of his beloved sister, with the club confirming the news as the entire NRL community unites in support of one of rugby league’s most decorated leaders.

In a statement released by the Panthers this morning, Cleary confirmed the loss, describing his sister as a constant source of love and encouragement throughout his life and coaching career. He said: “I am heartbroken to share that my sister has passed away peacefully today. She was my rock, my biggest cheerleader, and someone who never missed a game she could attend – whether I was coaching at the Warriors, Tigers or leading this incredible Panthers team. Her presence in my life meant everything, and I will carry her memory with me always.”

The club has granted Cleary indefinite leave to support his family during this difficult period, with assistant coach Cameron Ciraldo set to take on interim head coaching duties for the foreseeable future. Panthers CEO Brian Fletcher said: “Our hearts go out to Ivan and his family at this devastating time. Ivan is not just our coach – he is the heart and soul of this club, and we will do everything possible to support him and his loved ones as they navigate this grief. Football will always take a backseat to what matters most in life.”

Cleary’s coaching legacy is unparalleled in modern NRL history. After stints as head coach of the New Zealand Warriors (2006–2011) and Wests Tigers (2012–2015), he returned to Penrith in 2019 – the club where he began his playing career – and transformed them into a dominant force. He led the Panthers to four consecutive NRL Premierships between 2021 and 2024, becoming the first coach in league history to achieve the feat. Under his guidance, Penrith also claimed the World Club Challenge in 2025 and established a culture of excellence that has produced numerous State of Origin and international representatives.

Throughout his career, Cleary has often spoken of the profound influence his family has had on his approach to coaching, emphasizing values of resilience, teamwork and humility. His sister was a regular presence at Panthers home games and travelled to every grand final during their historic four-year run, celebrating each victory alongside him and the team.

Tributes have poured in from across the NRL, with rival coaches, players and administrators offering their condolences. The Wests Tigers and New Zealand Warriors both released statements honoring Cleary’s sister and acknowledging her role in his success. A minute’s silence will be observed at all NRL matches this weekend, with players wearing black armbands as a mark of respect.
