Heartbreak for Geelong Cats – Star Max Holmes Announces Passing of Beloved Sister

The Geelong Cats and the wider AFL community are mourning alongside star midfielder Max Holmes after the 24-year-old announced the passing of his beloved sister earlier today, with the club describing the news as a devastating blow for one of their most cherished players.

In a heartfelt post shared across his social media channels, Holmes confirmed the tragic loss, paying tribute to his sister as a constant source of love and support throughout his life and football journey. “I’m heartbroken to share that my beautiful sister passed away peacefully earlier today,” he wrote. “She was my biggest fan, my closest confidante, and someone who stood by me through every high and low – from junior footy right through to playing for the Cats. There are no words to describe how much she meant to me and my family.”

The Geelong Cats released an official statement expressing deep sympathy for Holmes and his family: “The entire Geelong Cats family is grieving alongside Max and his loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. Max is not only one of our most important players but a person of immense character who brings so much to our club. We are providing him with all the support he needs and ask that everyone respects his family’s privacy as they navigate this profound loss.”

Holmes has developed into one of the AFL’s premier midfielders since being drafted by Geelong in 2020. His rise through the ranks has been remarkable, with the 2025 season capping off a period of extraordinary growth – he claimed back-to-back Carji Greeves Medals as the club’s best and fairest player, earned selection in the All-Australian squad, and established himself as a critical high-impact midfielder driving the Cats’ on-field success.

Renowned for his explosive speed, clean ball handling, and ability to turn matches with decisive plays, Holmes has become central to Geelong’s game plan. His performances in big moments have cemented his status as a fan favourite, with coach Chris Scott praising his leadership qualities earlier this year: “Max has grown into more than just a great player – he’s a leader who lifts those around him. His dedication and heart are what make him so special to our team.”

The club has confirmed Holmes will take indefinite leave from all football commitments to be with his family. While the Cats prepare for their opening round clash against the Collingwood Magpies next month, they will not rush his return, prioritising his wellbeing above all else. Assistant coach James Rahilly will oversee midfield development in Holmes’ absence, with the team rallying to support their teammate from afar.

Tributes have poured in from across the AFL, with current and former players, rival clubs, and fans sharing messages of support. The AFL has confirmed that a minute’s silence will be observed at all opening round matches, with players wearing black armbands as a mark of respect for Holmes’ sister.
