THIS IS THE BEST NEWS WE COULD HOPE FOR: Manly Legend Cliff Lyons Returns as Senior Coaching and Development Advisor
SYDNEY – In an announcement that has ignited celebration across the Northern Beaches and the wider NRL community, Manly Sea Eagles head coach Anthony Seibold has officially confirmed that club legend Cliff “Napper” Lyons is returning to the organization in a senior role covering coaching, player personnel, and young talent development.
The news sent shockwaves of joy through Manly supporters, who have long revered Lyons as one of the greatest players in the club’s history. The former five-eighth will not be lacing up his boots again – instead, he will bring decades of rugby league wisdom to shape the Sea Eagles’ on-field strategy, recruitment decisions, and the next generation of talent coming through the club’s pathways.
Lyons enjoyed a glittering playing career with Manly between 1985 and 1999, featuring in 309 first-grade games for the maroon and white. He was instrumental in delivering two premierships to the club, in 1987 and 1996, and etched his name in rugby league folklore with two Dally M Medals (1990, 1994) – the game’s highest individual honor. His exceptional vision, pinpoint passing game, and calm leadership under pressure made him a pivotal figure in Manly’s dominant 1990s era, while his performance in the 1987 grand final earned him the Clive Churchill Medal.
Speaking at the official announcement, Seibold described the appointment as a landmark moment for the club. “Having someone of Cliff’s stature and experience join our team is the best news we could hope for,” he said. “His understanding of what it means to be a Sea Eagle runs deep, and his ability to identify and nurture talent will be invaluable as we build towards future success.”
Lyons, who has been involved in grassroots and junior development work since hanging up his boots, expressed his pride at returning to the club that shaped his career. “Manly has always been home to me,” he said. “To have the chance to give back and help guide both our current players and the young men coming through our system is an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. We have incredible potential here, and I’m ready to do everything I can to help this club reach the top again.”
The role will see Lyons work closely with the senior playing group, provide strategic input on player recruitment and retention, and lead initiatives to strengthen the club’s junior development pathways – ensuring Manly’s next generation of stars are equipped to carry on the legacy he helped build.
