GOOD NEWS FOR EVERTON: FA Lifts Jake O’Brien’s Suspension Following Successful Red Card Appeal

LIVERPOOL – Everton FC manager David Moyes has announced that the Football Association (FA) has overturned defender Jake O’Brien’s red card, clearing the way for him to return to action immediately after his dismissal in last weekend’s 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth.

The decision comes as a major boost to the Toffees, who saw their hopes of climbing to sixth in the Premier League table dashed in disappointing fashion at Hill Dickinson Stadium. O’Brien was shown a straight red card for a last-man foul midway through the second half, with Everton leading 1-0 at the time – a moment that proved pivotal in turning the match in Bournemouth’s favour.

Iliman Ndiaye had put Everton ahead just before half-time, converting a penalty won after Jarrad Branthwaite’s pressing forced a defensive error from the Cherries. The home side looked set to secure three valuable points until O’Brien’s dismissal, which shifted the momentum entirely. Bournemouth capitalised on their numerical advantage to score twice in the final 25 minutes, condemning Everton to a frustrating loss.

Speaking at today’s press conference, Moyes confirmed the successful appeal had resulted in the suspension being lifted: “This is excellent news for Jake and for the whole squad. We always felt the decision on the day was harsh, and we’re delighted the FA has agreed with our assessment after reviewing the evidence. Jake has been a key part of our team this season, and having him available again is a big lift for us.”

O’Brien joined Everton in July 2024 from Olympique Lyonnais on a four-year contract, and after a slow start to his Goodison Park career, he has established himself as a regular in the first team during the 2025/26 campaign. As of February 16, 2026, the defender has made 26 Premier League appearances, racking up 2,191 minutes of game time, keeping eight clean sheets, providing one assist, and completing 16 successful tackles. His composure at the back and ability to play out from defence have made him an important figure in Moyes’ defensive setup.

The reprieve means O’Brien will be eligible for Everton’s next fixture – a crucial away trip to Newcastle United on Saturday, as the club looks to reignite their push for European qualification. With just 12 games remaining in the Premier League season, every player and point will be vital in their bid to secure a top-six finish.
