The AFL landscape has been rocked by a landmark announcement from the Geelong Cats, with former senior coach Mark “Bomber” Thompson returning to the club in a comprehensive role encompassing ambassador duties, player personal development, strategic advice and talent identification.

The move has sent shockwaves throughout the league and beyond, uniting fans across generations who hold Thompson in high regard for his transformative impact on the Cats during his tenure at the helm. While his playing career – which included three premierships (1984, 1985, 1993) and a captaincy role – was forged at Essendon, Thompson is universally recognized as a revered figure at Geelong after guiding the club to two historic AFL flags in 2007 and 2009.

Speaking at today’s press conference, Geelong Cats CEO Steve Hocking described the appointment as a “game-changing moment” for the organization. “Mark’s connection to this club runs deep, and his ability to shape both individual players and entire teams is unparalleled in modern AFL history,” he said. “In this new role, he will work closely with our playing group to support their personal and professional growth, provide counsel to our coaching staff, and play a critical part in identifying and nurturing the next generation of football talent.”

Thompson, who has maintained strong ties to the Geelong community since stepping down as senior coach, expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to contribute to the club’s future success. “While my playing days were with Essendon, Geelong holds a special place in my heart – this is where I was able to help build something extraordinary,” he stated. “I’m excited to work with today’s players, share what I’ve learned over decades in the game, and help ensure the Cats remain at the forefront of talent development across the country.”

The appointment comes as Geelong looks to build on its rich history while positioning itself for sustained success in the evolving AFL environment. Industry analysts have noted that Thompson’s unique blend of playing pedigree, coaching expertise and deep football knowledge makes him ideally suited to bridge the gap between the club’s past achievements and future aspirations.
