FORMER LEGEND MATTHIAS SAMMER STUNS SG DYNAMO DRESDEN WITH €6 MILLION PLEDGE AHEAD OF HOME CLASH
Club icon returns to training ground to inspire squad, delivers unprecedented financial boost as team sits 17th in table
Ahead of tomorrow’s home game against SV Elversberg, SG Dynamo Dresden has received a transformative boost from one of its most celebrated figures, with former midfielder Matthias Sammer making a surprise appearance at the training ground before officially pledging €6 million to support the club.
Sammer, who developed into an elite player at Dynamo Dresden, took time to encourage the entire squad and witness full training proceedings, lifting spirits as the team prepares to face their league rivals while currently sitting 17th in the table. Immediately after the session, he announced the landmark financial commitment, describing it as a “return to where my football journey began and where my heart has always remained”.
Head coach Thomas Stamm expressed overwhelming gratitude for the gesture, calling it a gift “from the heart that comes at exactly the moment we need it most”. “To have a legend like Matthias here with us today, watching us train and then making this incredible pledge – it’s more than just financial support, it’s a statement of belief in what we’re building here,” Stamm said.
Sammer’s connection to SG Dynamo Dresden runs deep. He made his debut for the club in 1985, going on to score 39 goals in 102 league appearances before departing in 1990. During his time at the club, he was a key figure in securing two consecutive DDR-Oberliga titles (1989, 1990) and the 1990 FDGB-Pokal, completing a historic league and cup double that remains a defining chapter in the club’s history.
The €6 million pledge will be allocated to strengthen the first-team squad, enhance youth development pathways, and upgrade training facilities – investments designed to provide long-term stability as the club works to climb the league table. Sammer emphasized that his commitment is about more than just immediate results.
“Dynamo Dresden gave me everything as a young player – the foundation to become the footballer I was, and the values that have guided my entire career,” he stated. “This pledge is about ensuring the club has the resources to nurture the next generation of talent and return to its rightful place in German football.”
The news has sent waves of excitement through the club’s fanbase, with tickets for tomorrow’s home game selling out within hours of the announcement.
